Mynydd Isa is one of the most sought after areas in and around the Mold area, with its unique combination of local facilities and easy access to larger conurbations whenever necessary. It also offers a tranquil setting and in the case of areas such as this one, far reaching views towards the majesty of Moel Famau. It is in short, the ideal place for anyone seeking a quiet and peaceful life while being unwilling to travel too far into the wilderness in order to achieve it. This particular home is a perfect opportunity for anyone wanting to down-size for whatever reason and, with its Mediterranean style ceramic flooring throughout provides a reminder of those lazy days of holidays long ago and even better, is dead easy to keep clean so take that, James Dyson.
Erw Goed is a cul-de-sac of well maintained bungalows with outstanding views down over Mold and on to Moel Famau, their elevated position ensuring that even should the current blight of building wherever possible continue, their views will remain uninterrupted. Number 6 is found half way along the left hand side side to maximise the panorama from the rear garden and being a cul-de-sac ensures that there is little or no passing traffic. And anyway in this environment, any vehicles arriving outside are coming to see you so it would be churlish to complain.
A wide paved driveway runs down past the front lawn to the up and over door of the integrated garage, which also contains the wall mounted gas combi central heating boiler. There is a path from here across the front elevation of the home to the white UPVC front door which in turn opens into a small inner lobby. This contains something of a master stroke of practicality, a fitted carpet comprised entirely of the same coconut matting used to make door mats, meaning that even the terminally forgetful will enter your home with clean feet.
Opening the inner door into the lounge reveals the next surprise in the shape of the dark grey marble effect ceramic floor tiles that are fitted throughout the home. Initially I was unconvinced by these but, having recently returned from a Greek holiday was soon swayed by their attractive appearance and ease of day to day maintenance. The fact that they remain stain proof and utterly indestructible must also count as a bonus, assuming that grey remains your colour of choice. This large room is kept pleasantly bright courtesy of its twin aspect windows and provides sufficient space to become a dual purpose lounge/dining room if that is your choice. A fireplace has been internally sealed up but as the chimney stack is still in place, it is probably able to be reinstated if, like me you miss the comfort of a real flame on a chilly evening.
A door at the rear of the room takes us into an internal corridor where on our immediate left is the bathroom. While not the biggest bathroom on the planet it contains everything you would expect and appears in excellent order, providing a pedestal hand basin, lavatory and traditional bath, half of which is concealed behind a glass side panel preventing splashes escaping from the electric shower mounted above.
Following the ‘L’ shaped corridor through the home we turn a corner to find three doors. The two either side of us reveal linen storage cupboards, one that contained the old hot water tank prior to the installation of the gas combi boiler in the garage. The remaining door opens into the smaller of the two bedrooms, overlooking the front of the home. This initially appears quite a narrow space but is none the less big enough to contain a double bed and all the necessary accompanying free standing furniture.
Adjacent to here lies the principal bedroom which is considerably larger but what really sets it apart from the norm is the view beyond sloping garden. An uninterrupted panorama down across Mold towards the majestic skyline of Moel Fammau is the sort of sight that makes being ill worthwhile as it provides an excuse to lie in bed and enjoy it. Matron, pass the Lucozade…
The remaining door off the connecting corridor takes us in to the kitchen/dining room. Starting at the kitchen end there are units laid out around all the walls in a classic ‘U’ formation containing every imaginable piece of 21st century labour saving equipment, along with all the storage space you could need. One of the ways this storage space has been maximised borders on the genius; a brilliant idea that ensures the section of any cupboards frequently lost to the corners is cunningly used. Pulling on one of the drawers brings out a twin set of shelves and then the whole unit swings to one side allowing an identical set of follow these out from beneath the usually inaccessible corner section, meaning an end to crouching on the floor struggling (and usually failing) to reach almost forgotten items lurking in the gloom. A well thought out engineering tour de force.
The dining room end offers enough space to accommodate a lavish table or, as is becoming a popular option these days, a settee and easy chairs to form a secondary sitting area. The reasons for this style of living are self explanatory, taking the notion of the kitchen being the heart of the home and making it possible for it actually become just that. And bearing in mind the lounge is large enough to also contain a formal dining table anyway, this becomes an even more obvious solution.
There is a large pair of French windows opening onto the enclosed rear garden where a paved patio runs the full width of the building before giving way to the lawn as it slopes down to the rear perimeter hedge. To one side of the lawn is a traditional wooden summer house, positioned to take maximum advantage of the setting sun as it sinks towards the skyline.
